POSIX:2008, The Open Group Base Specifications Issue 7 で最新の POSIX の仕様が読めます。そのうち A.12 Utility Conventions には、システムが備えるユーティリティ(コマンド)が則るべき習慣がまとめられています。例えばコマンドのマニュアルに書かれる SYNOPSIS の書式に用いる記法が記載されています。
その中で次のようなガイドラインにぶつかりました。オプション "-W" が特別扱いされるというものです:
Guideline 3:
Each option name should be a single alphanumeric character (the alnum character classification) from the portable character set. The -W (capital-W) option shall be reserved for vendor options.
Multi-digit options should not be allowed.
何らかの理由で予約されていると思うのですが、Rationale にも該当する記述がありません。謎です。
